John Singer died suddenly without making a will. It was therefore necessary for Lucy to apply for probate and letters of administration to give her the authority to administer his estate.

Due to a lack of money and knowledge of what was required of her legally, letters of administration were not granted to Lucy until 1876, three years after John Singer’s death.

During this time, Lucy remarried, and the Probate Office required her new husband’s agreement before it would issue letters of administration to her.
