Overview
This confidential memorandum from ACP Nicolson, written 6 days before Ned’s execution, requests that the Officer in Charge of the Police depot organise for extra police in the north-east district. The annotations over the page further specify the need for extra police officers. The police feared that there might be riots or revolts at some level following the execution.

Kelly Extra Police required in Dist 10/11/90]Police Department, CHIEF COMMISSIONER’S OFFICE, Melbourne, 5th Novr. 1880 Memo: Forwarded to the Officer in Charge of the Depot with a request that he will tell off constables for this special duty. The man for Milawa will be sent to Wangaratta Police and the other to Lake Rowan to Benalla whence they will be dispatched to those stations. The men for the other stations named by Mr. Sadleir are to be sent direct to those stations. They are to proceed to the stations mentioned as quietly as possible and will be withdrawn as quietly when their services are no longer required, which will probably be in two or three weeks time. | For Sergt. Porters attention. Three (3) constables have been ordered in from out stations. Viz: one from Kyneton, one from Kilmore and one from Brighton. so that it will be necessary for Sergt. Porter to send 7 men from the Depot strength also. | Police Department, Superintendent’s Office Benalla Nov 4 1880Memo: The Execution of the convict Kelly having been fixed for 11th next. I would recommend as I have already done verbally, that the Station’s as per margin be temporarily strengthened, and request that the necessary police be sent for that purpose
- It will be as well that the constables should arrive at the different stations not later than Tuesday evening 9th next.
