Overview

A week after the Euroa bank was held up, Donald Cameron, a Member of the Legislative Assembly, and Superintendent Sadleir, were sent copies of the same letter: the Euroa Letter. Also known as the Cameron Letter, it was dictated by Ned whilst Joe Byrne took the role of scribe. News of Ned’s letter to the MP made the papers; this telegram was sent from CCP Standish to the Honorable Chief Secretary advising against publication of the letter. Standish believed it to contain ” a tissue of falsehoods”.

Telegram for Hon Chief Secretary

Confidential and urgent

see by Melbourne papers of today the Mr Donald Cameron has received a letter from Edward Kelly. A similar communication probably from the same pen was received by Supt Sadleir a few days since, it contains a tissue of falsehoods & makes various threats I think it inadvisable that publicity should be given to such a production & should recommend that Mr. Cameron should be advised not to publish the letter
