To the ACP from Detective Michael Ward re: interview with Jack Sherritt

VPRS 4965 Consignment P0 Unit 5 Item 61 Record 1 Document: To the ACP from Detective Michael Ward re: interview with Jack Sherritt

17/07/1879

Overview

This letter by Detective Ward to ACP Nicolson provides details of an interview Ward had with Aaron Sherritt’s brother Jack: a secret service agent. The letter describes a plan to have Aaron arrested as a way of drawing out Joe Byrne and implies that Aaron may also have been engaged as an agent. Detective Ward’s letter substantiates the theory that a great deal of the information gathered by police came directly from the secret service agents employed by the Police. A year later, Aaron’s association with the police would lead to his murder, as word of his involvement reached the outlaws.

Memo

North Eastern District
Beechworth Police Station
July 17th 1879I have the honor to report for the information of the assistant Chief Commissioner of Police, on yesterday I had an interview with Aaron and Jack Sherritt. Jack informed me that on Monday night last after Aaron was arrested he went to Mrs Byrns place and stole up to the house and listened about the arrest of Aaron, Mrs Byrns said Joe would likely call home when he would hear of Aarons arrest

will take place, this will be well circulated and the papers would take it up very warm, Sherritt has never been as far as Melbourne being a native of the District, this is my suggestion and only requires your approval to be carried into execution. If you should approve of Byrns house being watched I would respectfully suggest the following names. Const Corryn Ryan and Kirkburn, I will make all arrangements for their provisions if they take their Blankets with them that is if you can approve of it. With reference to the telegram that the others were at Mrs Byrns on Friday and seen by the Chinaman, he is unable to describe the Colour of the Horses his name is Ah Onu he was Complainant in a Case where Joe Byrns and Aaron Sherritt assaulted him, Senr. Constable Millane being the arresting Constable, at the time and has no doubt that Ah Onu could not be mistaken as to the identification of Joe Byrns, as he has lived for years within two hundred yards of Mrs. Byrns house. I will communicate with Constable Hayes of Myrtleford to appear on Tuesday the 22nd instant as a witness in the Case Queen v. Aaron Sherritt. For aiding and abetting the outlaws

on the 14th of June 1879 with arms and ammunition. Will the superintendant please cause Constable Healy of Melbourne to be in attendance. Should you not approve of Aaron being arrested in the way suggested by me, please let me know and the Charge can be set down on the Charge sheet the day of his surrendering to bail.

M. E. Ward
Det. 2358

Since writing the above I heard a rumour that I was about to be subpoenaed as a witness in the Case if so I would much rather be out of the District as I cannot stand the list. there is a prisoner here for Melbourne and I could take him to Melbourne on Saturday morning and return on Tuesday afternoon when all will be over, before going to Melbourne I could arrange all for the watching Byrns house and the arrest of Aaron.
