Photo of burning buildingThe Ballarat Historical Society holds a significant photographic collection that includes items of regional, state and national status. Several thousand photographs and images of the city have been collected over their 75 year history. However, a 50 year gap in the collection was identified as there has not been an active programme for the collecting or taking of photographs since the 1950s.

Their project Capture the Vision aims to collect images of Ballarat’s past, concentrating on those images from the last 50 years. Volunteer photographers are busily capturing images of day to day life in the 'rat, and to date have added approximately 15,000 images to their collection.

Their hard work was recognised at the 2011 Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards with a certificate of commendation.
