The Registrar of Probates was established as a separate office in 1960. Between 1948 and 1960 the Registrar had received direction from the Master of the Supreme Court (VA 2613). The Registrar's function is to administer the granting of probate and the administration of the estates of deceased persons where such grants are uncontested. Contested estates are decided by the Court. The Registrar also assists persons to obtain probate or letters of administration in relation to the estates of deceased persons where the value of the property does not exceed a stipulated amount.
