From 1859 to 1887 the Town of North Melbourne was known as the Borough, later Town, of Hotham. On 26 August 1887 the name of the Town of Hotham was officially changed to Town of North Melbourne.
On 30 October 1905 the Town of North Melbourne was unified with the City of Melbourne (VA 511). Following unification the former Town of North Melbourne was known as Hopetoun (North Melbourne) Ward until 1940 and Hotham Ward thereafter.
