On 30 May 1890 the Doncaster Riding of the Shire of Templestowe (VA 4761) was severed to form the Shire of Doncaster.
Twenty-five years later on 1 October 1915 the Shire of Templestowe was merged into the Shire of Doncaster. On 16 March 1926 the Shire was renamed the Shire of Doncaster and Templestowe (VA 2422).
