Officially known as: Department of Education III
On 1 January 2023, the Department of Education and Training (II) (DET) (VA 5035) was renamed the Department of Education (III) by the Governor in Council by Order made under section 10 of the Public Administration Act 2004 (Victorian Government Gazette, No. S 673, 5th December 2022). The name change was part of machinery of government changes made by the re-elected Labor Government under the leadership of Premier the Hon Daniel Andrews MP following the November 2022 State election.
As part of the machinery of government changes, the Training and Skills and Higher Education portfolios moved from Department of Education and Training II (VA 5035) into the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (VA 5284).
The primary functions of the Department were to deliver education and development services for children and young people, while maintaining links to the Skills portfolio to support Victorians to transition between school and further education and training.
Responsibility for Acts was transferred to the Department of Education (DoE) from DET under Administrative Arrangements Order No. 251 (Victorian Government Gazette, No. S 717, 19th December 2022).
At its establishment the Department supported the following ministerial portfolios:
• Minister for Education
• Minister for Early Childhood and Pre-Prep.
As of 1 January 2023, the Department was organised into central groups and regions. The groups included:
• Financial Policy and Information Services
• People and Executive Services
• Policy, Strategy and Performance
• Early Childhood Education
• School Education Programs and Support
• Victorian School Building Authority
• Schools and Regional Services
• Schools Workforce
• Senior Secondary Pathways Reform Taskforce.
The regions of the Department were North Eastern Victoria, North Western Victoria, South Western Victoria and South Eastern Victoria.
The Department’s authorities and entities included:
• Adult, Community and Further Education Board
• AMES (Adult Migrant English Service) Australia
• Children’s Services Coordination Board
• Disciplinary Appeals Boards
• Merit Protection Boards
• Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership
• Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
• Victorian Institute of Teaching
• Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority.
