In 1872 the Department of Agriculture was established as a branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538).
From 1882 the Department of Agriculture was established in its own right and gradually its responsibilities increased.
In 1985 the Department was superseded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (VA 2649).
