Function / Content

The Commonwealth Electoral Act 1902 (Commonwealth) and subsequent amendments established a Chief Electoral Officer for the Commonwealth and a Chief Electoral Officer for each state.

Each state was divided into Electoral Divisions equal to the number of Members of the House of Representatives to be chosen therein. Divisions were further divided into electoral Districts.

Electoral Registrars in each District were responsible for altering the electoral roll for people changing residence from division to division and district to district. Notifications containing statistical data of such changes were forwarded to the Chief Electoral Officer every June and December.

This series consists of correspondence containing such notifications from Electoral Registrars in Victoria addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer in Melbourne. The correspondence establishes the name of the division and district, and contains the following information:

Number of electors on the general roll last issued
Number of names added to general roll
Number of names struck from roll owing to transfer to another district

How to use the records

Correspondence is arranged in chronological order by date of receipt. Consult the relevant date range within the series to find record required.

Recordkeeping system

All correspondence is arranged in chronological order by date of receipt at the Department of the Chief Secretary. Each letter was allocated a file number in single number order (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.). The series was not registered as part of VPRS 3992 Inward Registered Correspondence Part III, and there are no control records extant.
