Function / Content
This series consists of examination results for both Higher Education and TAFE students from the first examinations held at the school in 1909 until an administration change separated the two divisions in 1975. The results may be in the form of a percentage mark, or the letters HD (High Distinction), D (Distinction), C (Credit), P (Pass), FP (Fail Pass), F (Fail), N (Fail), NP (Near Pass), DEF (Deferred), WH (With held). An index of subject/syllabus codes and names is located at the beginning of most volumes (or at the beginning of the year) from 1960 onwards.
Amendment notices and special exam notifications were also included where necessary. These indicated the reason for a change of mark, the date of the change of the mark, and provided in most cases the name or names of persons whose authorisation was needed for the alteration to occur.
Units 1 through to 14 are divided into Departmental and Engineering volumes. Those units indicated in the Consignment Details as being 'Engineering' are the handwritten results, which were recorded by Swinburne. Those units indicated in the Consignment Details as being 'Departmental' were the results as recorded by the Department of Education, and collated by Swinburne.
The following subjects can be found within the series:
Engineering; Blacksmithing; Arithmetic; Geometry; Applied Mechanics, Algebra; Trigonometry; Electricity and Magnetism; Electric Wiring; Building construction; English; Land Surveying; Carpentry; Cookery; Woodcarving; Laundry Work; Dressmaking; Plumbing; Drawing; Needlework; Lettering; Design; Invalid Cookery.
For results from the time period of 1975 onwards, researchers should consult either VPRS 14020 Examination Results [Higher Education Division] or VPRS 14021 Examination Results [TAFE Division].
The Education Department (VA 714) also kept registers of examination results from various Technical Schools (see VPRS 923).

Recordkeeping system
Results are arranged chronologically by date and then by subject according to the subject code, then alphabetically by candidate name. Subject codes changed over the years. From the beginning of the series in 1909 until 1963, subjects were entered by name. From 1963 until 1971, subjects were entered by numerical subject code. From 1971 until 1974, subjects were entered by an alpha-numerical code.An index of the subject/syllabus code and subject name is located at the front of most volumes from unit 29 (1960) through to unit 102.
Candidates are listed in alphabetical order within the pages relating to the results of each subject they were enrolled in.
Results in units marked as being 'Departmental' by the consignment details are listed by subject. Candidates are primarily listed by candidate number, and percentage mark. For some subjects, candidates are listed by name, and in some instances other details such as candidates' addresses were also recorded. Results in units marked as being 'Engineering' by the consignment details are listed by subject in rough alphabetical order. Candidates are listed alphabetically within each subject.
