Function / Content
The photographs in this series were accumulated by the Education History Unit (EHU) of the Department of Education and Training. They depict schools, school students, teachers, educational activities and other education-related subject-matter.The vast majority of these images is black and white, however the size, mounting and quality of the photographs varies considerably.
Commonly the file titles are the names of schools depicted in the photographs. Other file titles appear to have been taken from "Australian Thesaurus of Education Descriptors", a copy of which is in VPRS 14581 Administration Files of Education History Unit Photograph and Negative Collection [Photographic Office Files].
How to use the records
Consult the descriptions in the records details to locate photographs of interest.Although they were originally housed together, photographs and negatives have been arranged in two consignments for separate storage, and therefore better preservation.
Recordkeeping system
This series was transferred to PROV from the EHU.The transfer consisted of more than thirty thousand photographs. Most of these were stored in a discernable order. For approximately one thousand miscellaneous photographs and other items, no order was apparent. Of these miscellaneous photographs, those with labels similar to existing file titles in VPRS 14514 have been added to this series. In many cases it is apparent, from accompanying envelopes and notes, that the photographs were originally removed from this alphabetical sequence
The records are arranged in semi-alphabetical order by file title.
