Function / Content
These records are arranged in order by school number. Each file may contain a sheet registering the school history, correspondence between schools, individuals and the Department of Education, notes, newsclippings, original and photocopied school documents and copies of school history publications.VPRS 14519 / P2 contains school histories, newsclippings, photographs, fliers and correspondence with the Education History Unit (rather than the Department of Education). It is not known why there are two sequences of school histories, however in this second sequence the histories are frequently shorter or consist of notes and drafts, as distinct from the stapled manuscript pages in P1.
There are some annotations on various documents, in the form 89/3756. These may refer to VPRS 640 Central Inward Primary Schools Correspondence, VPRS 903 Inwards Registered Correspondence, VPRS 9514 Central Correspondence Files - Technical Schools, VPRS 9514 Central Correspondence Files - Technical Schools General or VPRS 10249 High Schools Inwards Correspondence Files. These references to other correspondence series are subject to further research.
The school histories were collected in preparation for the three-volume publication, "Vision and Realisation: a Centenary History State Education in Victoria, Education Department of Victoria, 1973". This publication is available in PROV reading rooms.
Units 1 and 54 of consignment P1 includes some miscellaneous items, including a list of published school histories, a summary of restructures in term 4, 1996 and an advertisement for the auction of rural school properties, also in 1996.
