Function / Content

This book is a record of seeds received at the Stanley Nursery. The Stanley Nursery was one of a few nurseries operated by the Forests Commission. Others included those at Macedon and Creswick. The primary purpose of the nursery was to grow plants for the Forests Commission. Plants were also grown for private sale. This function was undertaken at a time when there existed few private nurseries. The Commission was establishing large numbers of plantations during the period covered by this record. There was a special interest in the nurture of conifers and also eucalypts. This record provides a history of what was being grown during that period. Some species now regarded as weeds, and an environmental problem, were being propogated by the State authority at the time.

After the book ceased to be used for the purpose of recording seeds received into the nursery, it was used briefly as an employment record and a record of mail items posted.
