Function / Content
This series comprises an index to the Historic Mine and Infrastructure Plans (VPRS 16163) of the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118), enabling them to be located by name of mine, company and area. The plans are evidence of activities or evidence acquired from external workers in the geological, minerals, extractive, petroleum and other associated sectors.Basic information gathered from the plans including plan content, author, scale and year of production were recorded in a card index system, in this case arranged alphabetically by mine name, mining company and/or area.
The date range of the index appears to be approximately 1912 to 1980 and was likely superseded by digital record-keeping systems. An internal reference database was introduced to Geological Survey Victoria in the mid-1980s, known as the GEDIS Reference Database, as part of a digitisation program for physical assets, and some of the maps and plans were registered in this system with a catalogue number as well as a plan identification number.
How to use the records
Refer to the consignment details for this series to retrieve the relevant cards for the required mine, company or area.Once you get details about the plan from the index, refer to the consignment details for VPRS 16163 and search for the plan identification number.
Recordkeeping system
This series was created to provide access to the historic mine plans located in VPRS 16163. A secondary index was also created to provide access to the plans by Parish name (VPRS 16165).All drawings of the same subject were given the same number, followed by a letter obtained from the list below:
-A- Underground workings, plan and section of the same sheet
- B - Shows surface data and underground workings
- C - Composite plans of levels
- D - Drilling plan
- E - Engineering equipment
- F - Received from other departments
- G- Geological map
- H - Housing
- L - Longitudinal section
- M - Miscellaneous (e.g. topographic map)
- P - Plan of individual level
- S - Section (other than longitudinal or transverse, but including those made as a result of drilling
- T - Transverse section
The result is an identification number that appears as, for example, “518/G/5”. In this example, the number 518 corresponds to the specific geographical area of Ballarat. The letter “G” serves as a code for the content type, which is a geological map. The number five (5) indicates the sequential order denoting this is the fifth geological map produced for Ballarat.
