Function / Content

This series comprises volumes of records of the Visiting Committee to the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum (VA 1275), later known as Bendigo Benevolent Asylum and Lying-in Hospital (1886 – 1937), Bendigo Benevolent Home (1937 – 1963) and then Bendigo Home and Hospital for the Aged (1863-1988). The volumes include Reports of Inspections, Visitor’s Books and Visitor’s Register. The Visiting Committee consisted of three members elected every three months by and from the Committee of Management. The duties of the Visiting Committee, or one of its members, was to visit the institution at least once a week and to inspect the wards and to report on that inspection to the weekly meeting of the Committee of Management. The Visiting Committee was also able to make suggestions as to repairs, alterations, and improvements or general management of the institution. Together these records provide details of visitors over time, notes about visitors' observations during their weekly visits, and reports to the Committee of Management.
