Function / Content

This series comprises minutes and papers of the Geriatric Community Care Service for the City of Brunswick associated with Mount Royal Hospital (VA 1280).

The Geriatric Community Care Service for the City of Brunswick commenced in 1973 as a home care service catering for the health and social needs of older people living in the community. The Service provided a combination of medical, allied health, nursing, clerical staff and tradesmen who visited patients in their homes. The purpose of this was to allow patients to accept treatment and assistance in the environment in which they felt most comfortable. Later visits were also undertaken to day hospitals and day centres. This service went on to be the model for the Aged Care Assessment Program that was formally begun by the Commonwealth Government in 1987.

Also included in this series is a related report entitled, ‘A Geriatric Community Care Service in Brunswick: A Pilot study based at Mount Royal Hospital’.
