Function / Content
This series comprises minutes of the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Ethics Committee on Medical Research.
In 1974 the hospital established a Board of Medical Research and an Ethics Committee on Research to co-ordinate and oversee all medical research. The Ethics Committee considered and advised the Board of Management and the Board of Medical Research on all ethical matters arising from research activity and perused all research protocols including the importance of obtaining informed consent of patients and volunteers.
The Ethics Committee was abolished in 1996 with the final meeting took place on 5 December 1996. Matters of ethical research at the hospital are now coordinated by the Human Research Ethics Committee.
