How to use the records

This series comprises proposal files of the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Board of Medical Research.

In 1974 the hospital established a Board of Medical Research and an Ethics Committee on Research to co-ordinate and oversee all medical research.

The Board of Medical Research was responsible for analysing project proposals and

  • considered the approval of clinical research projects or any research project involving human beings or animals;
  • disseminated information on research projects;
  • assessed professional and scientific value of submitted research projects in absolute terms and costs in time and money; and
  • ensured the requirements of the Federal Department of Health were met in the use of any imported therapeutic agents.

Recordkeeping system

This series comprises project proposal and associated documents grouped in unregistered files. The projects are registered using an annual single number system and each file is titled with the range of control symbols of the projects within the file. Within each file, the documents are arranged according to the corresponding project’s control symbol.

Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Archives.
