Function / Content

This series lists holders of residence area rights within the Beechworth Mining Division of the Beechworth Mining District with the number of their right.

One of the privileges under the Mines Act, conferred by the holding of a miner's right until 1935 was that of residence on up to one acre on a gold-fields area. Those occupying a residence area were "deemed in law to be possessed ... of such ... parcels ... and the property therein".

From 1935, with the passing of the Land (Residence Areas) Act 1935 the right of occupation of residence areas was broadened to all Crown lands and placed under the Land Act rather than the Mines Act.

It is unclear whether any volumes pre or post date the volumes currently in archival custody.
