Function / Content
This series contains reports and other publications published by the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118).It includes a collection of Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) Reports, Victorian Initiative for Minerals & Petroleum (VIMP) Reports, Memoirs of the GSV, GSV Bulletins and other special or technical reports. The earliest extant records in this series date back to 1883.
GSV Reports were published regularly from 1968 to 2004 and report on specific activities or projects.
VIMP Reports were published jointly by the GSV from 1994 to 2006.
Memoirs of the GSV contain an exhaustive survey of a particular field or a complete treatment of some special phase of the mining industry and were published between 1902 and 1979.
GSV Bulletins are small but complete reports on a particular mine or group of mines, or general reports on mining problems, published between 1903 and 1988.
How to use the records
Browse files by title. If known, use the catalogue number (GEDIS ID) to identify a particular publication.
Recordkeeping system
The records are arranged by publication type in order of publication, though there are occasional gaps in the collection. GSV Reports 59-60, 64, 68, 70, 77-79, 81-83 and 113 and VIMP Reports 20 and 91 were never published.GSV reports were initially numbered both sequentially per year (e.g. 1968/1, 1970/1 etc.) and sequentially over all but from 1978 (report 58) maintained just the overall numbering sequence.
An internal reference database was introduced to Geological Survey of Victoria in the mid-1980s, known both as GEDIS and BIB, as part of a digitisation program for physical assets, including licence documentation. As individual publications were registered in the system they were assigned a unique reference ID, listed against items as catalogue number.
Before coming into the custody of Public Record Office Victoria, this series was held at the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) Drill Core Library at Werribee.
