This series consists of meeting minutes and related agenda papers from Glenelg Shire Council II (VA 3733). This includes minutes from Ordinary Council meetings, Special Council meetings, Budget meetings, Committee meetings and Statutory meetings.
Ordinary Council meetings are held monthly, and the minutes of these include records of what decisions were made, who was in attendance and other consequential events that occurred during the meeting.
Special Council meetings are called by the Mayor or Chief Executive Officer to deal with a specific item that cannot wait until the next Ordinary Council meeting. The related records contain meeting minutes, agendas, tabled papers and reports, notices of meetings, and correspondence.
Minutes of council meetings were created in accordance with section 145 of the Municipal Institutions Act 1863 (pg. 239) and with subsequent legislation relating to local government including the Local Government Act 1958 (pg. 135). Many local government bodies in existence prior to 1863 maintained records of their meetings in the form of minutes.
These acts have required that for each meeting of council, minutes of all proceedings are recorded together with the names of all councillors present and all who vote for and against motions. Minutes of council meetings can include the decisions made by the council, the actions taken, voting outcomes, council approvals and agreements.
