Function/Contents

This series consists of black and white negatives maintained by the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioners. The negatives comprise images of various aspects of port life.

The negatives were numbered sequentially and placed within envelopes measuring a standard 142 mm x 88 mm. The sequential identification number was recorded on both the negative and the envelope. Generally there is only one negative within an envelope although occasionally several negatives of the same image may be grouped together. Within the numerical sequence there was also provision for linking related images through the use of an alpha-suffix. For example, the negatives numbered 8 and 8A are of closely related images.

The negative numbers appear to correspond to sequential identification numbers recorded alongside some of the photographic prints within VPRS 8362 Photograph Albums: Alpha-Numeric Sequence.

The identification number of these negatives can be obtained from the List of Photograph Captions in Photograph Albums (Alpha Numeric Sequence) VPRS 8364. Negatives for photographs numbered 1632 to 1773 were not apparently held separately.

The series date range appears to correspond with the creation of the Photograph Albums: (Alpha-Numeric Sequence) (VPRS 8362) and the List of Photograph Captions (VPRS 8364).
