PROS 22/04 Disposal Standard sets out the principles and requirements that Victorian public offices must comply with in order to lawfully dispose of public records. Public records may be disposed of by authorised destruction or custody transfer.

Records created in all formats and held in all systems and storage environments must be disposed of in accordance with this Standard.

The Disposal Standard is comprised of the following areas:

  • Authorisation
  • Implementation
  • Transfer obligation

Material in the Public Record Office Victoria archival collection contains words and descriptions that reflect attitudes and government policies at different times which may be insensitive and upsetting

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples should be aware the collection and website may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.
