Recordkeeping system
When correspondence was received at the Department it was registered in VPRS 422 Secretary's Inward Correspondence Register, Annual Single Number System I and then indexed by name in VPRS 12600 Name Index to Secretary's Inward Correspondence Register, Annual Single Number System I and by subject in this series (VPRS 12601). All correspondence was then filed in registration number order in VPRS 421 Secretary's Inward Registered Correspondence, Annual Single Number System. This series (VPRS 12601) had commenced by 1858. However, since it has not been confirmed that either VPRS 421 or VPRS 422 commenced before 1859, the relationship between this series and the other two prior to 1859 is subject to research. Since Department of Railways I was part of Board of Land and Works in 1858, it is possible that this series indexed other correspondence systems of that agency.
