Function / Content

This series comprises volumes recording diagrams of the rolling stock (locomotives, rail motors, rail tractors, carriages, wagons (flat and open), freight vehicles, tank wagons, passenger cars) used by Victorian Railways (VA 2876). Preparation of these diagrams appears to have commenced at the beginning of the 20th century, but, there is no certainty regarding the date range of this series. It has been estimated from the contents and the style of presentation of the drawings. Many of the diagrams in PROV’s custody are copies of originals. Some records may also have been created by the State Transport Authority (VA 1038) and Metropolitan Transit Authority (VA 1044).

The diagrams summarise information about each class of rolling stock. Each diagram gives an elevation (side view) of the class and usually an end view or plan. Details are given of dimensions, technical data, the number built and of the builders.

Some of the volumes were transferred to PROV from the archives of the Melbourne Tram Museum. These volumes had been donated to the Museum by ex-Public Transport Corporation (VA 2984) staff.

Recordkeeping system

Most volumes are assigned a numerical identifier that appears to be sequential, e.g. “761”, “762”, etc.; however, the meaning of these identifiers is subject to further research.

Most volumes contain an index at the front with page numbers listed for each corresponding diagram.
