What do I need to know?

All you need to know is the approximate year that the case was heard in Melbourne. Note that there are limited original hard-copy indexes for the 1871-1928 period, and that of those some are so damaged that they are unable to be used. This is why insolvency records are being indexed by volunteers for online searching, starting with the oldest records.

What are in these records?

Insolvency case records (Record Series 759, 762, 765 and 10246) contain records including:

  • insolvent's statement
  • proof of debts submitted by creditors
  • statement of assets and receipts
  • statement of disbursements and unrealised estate
  • order of appointment for certificate of discharge

Material in the Public Record Office Victoria archival collection contains words and descriptions that reflect attitudes and government policies at different times which may be insensitive and upsetting

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples should be aware the collection and website may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.
