How to use the records

This series is a sample of consumer complaints correspondence filed with the Consumer Protection Council, later Consumer Protection Bureau and later again Consumer Affairs Bureau, between 1970 and 1976. The sample was randomly selected from 446 boxes of consumer complaints correspondence which were scheduled for destruction. The remainder of the correspondence was destroyed 21 July 1986.

Consumer complaints were received from persons who were the subject of fraudulent, illegal or unfair trade or commercial practices. The consumer complaint correspondence is the record of these complaints and details the name and address of the complainant, the name and address of the firm concerned; the details of the complaints; copies of correspondence between the parties and the Bureau and/or record of the action taken. The Bureau was able to investigate consumer complaints and seek a solution to them.

The correspondence is arranged chronologically by receipt of initial complaint and controlled by an annual single number registration system. No index to complaints is held by the office.
